One Off Project Arts Council Decisions

OK, the last one now. The ones for one-off projects. None, count them, NONE for literature. And look at the amounts involved. Why is literature so badly funded? Actually, not so much literature as writers.

If a writer wants funding from the Arts Council, the Bursary Award is the one to go for (unless you find reason for the Travel and Training Award), and I do hope they increase funding for that one as the years go by.

One perception that I think works against us, is that writing costs nothing to achieve beyond a pencil and paper, while a theatre production or community arts festival or cutting-edge art installation can all be expensive.

The trouble is, getting published is much more competitive than it was a few decades ago, and today a writer stands a much better chance if he/she can avail of workshops, retreats, master classes, editorial services, etc., all of which do cost money and a lot of time. I would definitely attend some of these, if I could afford them.

Which reminds me...I have a Travel and Training Award proposal I have to get submitted tout de suite!! Gotta go! (wish me luck!)

When a big honeypot of 80 million euro appears there is a scramble for grants. Some get them and some don't. The Arts Council will never say why it funded some and passed on the others. The arts scene involves a lot of complicated, sometimes frustrating horse trading.
